Browns v. Jaguars observations

Just a few thoughts on the Browns 1st preaseason game, along with additional thoughts on the upcoming season

  • Mostly watched this as background noise since the backups and 4th stringers were playing quite a bit, and the game was boring quickly
  • Yes, it’s preseason, but the Browns just looked better, cleaner, more efficient than the Jags. I made a comment on Twitter how the Jags look like the Browns of old, not talented, unorganized, and just a level or two below
  • The Browns sat NUMEROUS starters in this game and it looked like they were still WAY better than the Jags. Nothing flashy was being run on either side of the ball and it looked like if they really wanted to, they could have dropped 35–40 points
  • Really impressed with JOK (Jeremiah Owus-Koramoah), he played quite a bit despite missing time with COVID during training camp, but played like the 1st round talent the Browns expected of him. He’s so fast and closes very quickly. I don’t think the Browns will give up many large screen plays this season with him on the field. Its early but he looked good.
  • Also impressed with Demetric Felton, who the Browns drafted in 7th round. He made a few nice plays getting passes from 2nd and 3rd string QBs and sometimes being the lone target on the field. Be very interesting if he continues the good play what may transpire in his role. I don’t think he’ll take snaps away from RBs but I could see him as slot guy and even Special Teams return game.
  • I have stated before, I think the Urban Meyer experiment in Jacksonville will be an unmitigated disaster, this team looked like a disaster, Lawrence will be good/great, but everything else is not good. I just don’t think Meyer can take the losing like he will this year and I suspect after 2 seasons he will step away for health reasons.
  • For general thoughts on the Browns — -they got really one preseason game with the main guys and then its on to 9/12 match up with the Chiefs. I would like to see at least a quarter and half with the starters to gauge how this team will look. I understand they may rest some guys completely until regular season, but it would be nice as a fan to see it all in action for a few drives.
  • I’m curious to see how the depth chart rolls around once cut downs begin and gets to final 53. Again Felton, mentioned above, could be a surprise based on an expanded role. I think the Browns really like him. I think Anthony Schwartz with his injuries still makes team but might be on the DPJ route his rookie year, which isn’t a bad thing, as we’ve seen. I also see Newsome and JOK as part of starting defense, I don’t think they will sit him as backup for first round, unless he’s bombing badly in games and practices. I see Newsome having big impact like Denzel Ward did his rookie year.
  • Next game is the Giants, who also appear to be a dumpster fire (its nice to call other teams this name, and not your own), I imagine starters will play this game for about a quarter, maybe some starters for a half, and then thats it. Think coaches want guys healthy and ready in roughly a month and not risking anything. GO BROWNS!
